How many stamps should your loyalty card have?
Enter what a regular spends and what the reward costs you. The calculator shows the cost per visit, how long a card takes to fill, and a starting point for the number of stamps.
Your card
The defaults are an example (a coffee shop), not data. Count the reward at your cost price, not its menu price.
How the numbers work
Cost per visit is the reward's cost to you divided by the stamps on the card. A free coffee that costs you $1.20 on a 9-stamp card costs about 13 cents per visit.
Share of spend is that cost divided by everything the customer spent to fill the card. It is the honest comparison with a discount, and it is usually much lower than the "10% off" people assume.
Time to fill matters as much as cost. A card that takes six months to fill gets forgotten; one that fills in a few weeks keeps people coming back. Read more in how many stamps should a punch card have.
Questions about stamp cards
How many stamps should a loyalty card have?
Most small shops land between 5 and 12. Pick a number your regulars can fill in roughly one to two months: if someone visits twice a week, 8 to 10 stamps works; if they visit once a month, 4 to 6 is enough. Then check the reward costs you a small share of what they spend on the way.
What should the reward cost me?
Count the reward at what it costs you to make or buy, not its menu price. A free coffee might sell for $5 but cost you about a dollar in beans, milk and cup. Divide that cost by the stamps on the card to get the cost per visit.
Is “buy 9, get the 10th free” the same as a 10% discount?
Not quite. It is one free item after nine paid visits, so the customer gets about a tenth of their spend back only if they finish the card. Many cards are never finished, and the reward is counted at your cost, so the real cost is usually far lower than 10%.
Should I give a free first stamp?
Many shops do. A card that already shows progress feels closer to the reward, and research on the “endowed progress effect” found people were more likely to complete a card that started with stamps on it. It also costs you nothing until the card is finished.
